Today the Productivity Commission has released a preliminary report about which vital Australian human services governments should consider privatising.
The report says our vital community services, including alcohol and drug services, community-based mental health services, family support services and out of home care and homelessness services, should all be examined to see how they can be subjected to more “competition and contestability”.
This is simply code for community services being taken over by for-profit companies.
ASU (NSW & ACT) Secretary, Natalie Lang says, "No-one should profit from services to vulnerable people. That the Commission has not ruled this out in its preliminary report is alarming and cannot and will not go unchallenged."
The Productivity Commission is calling for responses to the report by 27 October. Read the report and to send a response here: http://www.pc.gov.au/…/identifying-ref…/preliminary-findings
